What does it mean?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Raleway;\">Think of education as the sum of two indispensable factors: schooling (opportunities for enrolment), and learning (the outcome of being enrolled in a school).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Raleway;\">When education combines both schooling and learning, it enhances the life of the person who benefits from it.\u00a0That person should access, or create for themselves better opportunities than if they had not been in school. Education should equip them with the tools to positively impact their community, and ultimately contribute to social change.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Raleway;\">But, what happens when schooling or learning, or both are dysfunctional? What we witness in many African countries, and other countries worldwide answers that question.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-family: Raleway;\">Schooling: Africa is progressing impressively fast but needs to broaden its impact<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Raleway;\"><span style=\"font-size: calc(var(--rem) * 1px * 1.0625); letter-spacing: 0px;\">Enrollment rates are growing at an unprecedented rate. African countries are surpassing the historical performances of industrial countries<\/span><span style=\"font-size: calc(var(--rem) * 1px * 1.0625); letter-spacing: 0px;\">.<\/span> For instance, Morocco successfully increased girls&#8217; enrollment rate from 57 percent to 88 percent in 11 years. It took 40 years for the United States to achieve the same result.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Raleway;\"><span style=\"font-size: calc(var(--rem) * 1px * 1.0625); letter-spacing: 0px;\">However, too many children are not in school. A<\/span><span style=\"font-size: calc(var(--rem) * 1px * 1.0625); letter-spacing: 0px;\">bout 34.1 million primary-school-aged children <\/span><span style=\"font-size: calc(var(--rem) * 1px * 1.0625); letter-spacing: 0px;\">and 96.9 million secondary-school-aged children are yet to be enrolled <\/span><span style=\"font-size: calc(var(--rem) * 1px * 1.0625); letter-spacing: 0px;\">(2016). <\/span><span style=\"font-size: calc(var(--rem) * 1px * 1.0625); letter-spacing: 0px;\">This accounts for 50% of the total population <\/span><span style=\"font-size: calc(var(--rem) * 1px * 1.0625); letter-spacing: 0px;\">(<\/span><a style=\"font-size: calc(var(--rem) * 1px * 1.0625); letter-spacing: 0px;\" href=\"http:\/\/uis.unesco.org\/sites\/default\/files\/documents\/fs48-one-five-children-adolescents-youth-out-school-2018-en.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">263 million children<\/a><span style=\"font-size: calc(var(--rem) * 1px * 1.0625); letter-spacing: 0px;\">) <\/span><span style=\"font-size: calc(var(--rem) * 1px * 1.0625); letter-spacing: 0px;\">of out-of-school children worldwide<\/span><span style=\"font-size: calc(var(--rem) * 1px * 1.0625); letter-spacing: 0px;\">. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"font-family: Raleway; color: #0c141d; font-size: 18px;\">\u21d2 There is a need to expand educational opportunities and strengthen their penetration rate.<\/span><\/h5>\n<h3><span style=\"font-family: Raleway;\">Learning: Africa is accumulating alarming gaps<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Raleway;\">Even after several years of schooling, millions of children do not master foundational knowledge. For instance, <span style=\"font-size: calc(var(--rem) * 1px * 1.0625); letter-spacing: 0px;\">in West Africa and Central Africa,<\/span><span style=\"font-size: calc(var(--rem) * 1px * 1.0625); letter-spacing: 0px;\">\u00a055% of students graduate primary education with insufficient knowledge in reading or mathematics <\/span><span style=\"font-size: calc(var(--rem) * 1px * 1.0625); letter-spacing: 0px;\">to effectively pursue their studies <\/span><span style=\"font-size: calc(var(--rem) * 1px * 1.0625); letter-spacing: 0px;\">(2014).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"font-family: Raleway; color: #0c141d; font-size: 18px;\">\u21d2 There is especially a need to improve the quality of learning for education to be more effective.<\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Raleway;\">In the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldbank.org\/en\/publication\/wdr2018\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">World Development Report 2018<\/a>, Jim Yong Kim expressed this urgency. He wrote: \u201c[s]chooling without learning is a terrible waste of precious resources and of human potential. Worse, it is an injustice. Without learning, students will be locked into lives of poverty and exclusion, and the children whom societies fail the most are those most in need of a good education to succeed in life&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Raleway;\">Tissi aims to amplify the learning revolution in Africa. We tackle both indispensable factors of education: schooling and learning. We help actors create more schools, making sure that they are effective learning centers. And, we help transform existing schools into effective learning environments.
